Debbie Martin, a 66-year-old resident of Michigan City, Indiana, faced overwhelming health issues after dedicating 31 years to working at Franciscan Health Michigan City. She found herself isolated and unable to drive, which led to severe depression. Concerned about her future and the fate of her dog Cooper if she needed nursing home care, Martin was introduced to Franciscan's Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) by her home health physical therapist.
PACE is a national program designed for individuals aged 55 and older who qualify for nursing-home level care but prefer staying in their own homes. It emphasizes community-based healthcare with a comprehensive approach that includes primary care and specialty services.
Martin joined PACE in August 2024 and found it transformative. "They saved my life," she stated. The program helped her regain independence by providing necessary therapies and social activities that improved her quality of life.
The program assigns each participant a team comprising a nurse practitioner, social worker, therapists, dietitian, nurse, and home care coordinator. Martin appreciates this setup: “I get therapy there when I need it... Just the availability of everyone you need in one place is terrific.”
She also values the sense of community within PACE. "They aren’t my friends; they’re my family," Martin expressed about fellow participants and staff members.
Paula Hedrich, activities coordinator at the Michigan City PACE program, noted Martin’s positive influence on others: “She gets along with everybody and makes other people feel good.”
Martin encourages others considering PACE to explore its benefits: “Just come visit and feel free to ask any questions.”
Franciscan’s Senior Health & Wellness Program offers PACE in several Indiana locations including Dyer and Michigan City. Further information can be obtained online or via phone at 219-864-2630 (Dyer) or 219-214-4619 (Michigan City).
