Early detection crucial in colorectal cancer diagnosis

Annette Eichholz, a resident of Monticello, Indiana, has always prioritized her health through regular checkups and screenings. In 2019, she noticed blood during bowel movements but dismissed it as minor. However, in January 2020, a colonoscopy revealed a tumor in her rectum, leading to a cancer diagnosis.

Eichholz emphasizes the importance of early detection: “Don’t be afraid to do the preventative exams or checkups if you notice an issue,” she said. “If you have colorectal cancer, you have it; however, early detection and diagnosis are key to an excellent outcome.”

Her initial treatment plan involved surgery without additional treatments. However, further tests revealed Stage 4 colorectal cancer with the tumor affecting her uterus. This led to chemotherapy starting in February 2020 and radiation therapy soon after.

Eichholz managed her own transportation for treatments in Lafayette: “I did this for my own mental state,” she stated. Surgery followed in October 2020 to remove the tumor and perform a hysterectomy.

She stresses open communication with healthcare providers: “Share with them so that they can help you and you can help them.”

Now cancer-free for four years, Eichholz continues follow-up care at Franciscan Health Cancer Center Lafayette. She expressed gratitude for her healthcare team and support system: “I feel great and live a full and active life.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
