Franciscan Health Indianapolis has expanded its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Center for Women & Children, adding eight more patient rooms and beds. This expansion increases the total capacity to 38 rooms and beds.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the NICU, which was established in 1974. A reunion carnival was recently held to celebrate this milestone, bringing together past NICU graduates, their families, and staff members who have been part of the unit's history.
The Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children is the only Level III NICU serving south central Indiana. As a Level III NICU, it is equipped with advanced technology and specialists trained to care for infants requiring intensive neonatal care.
"We are very grateful to have been able to expand the number of room and NICU beds we offer as we continue to build upon the services we offer," said Lori Kraeszig, NICU manager at Franciscan Health Indianapolis. "We cover a wide range of area in south central Indiana as a Level III NICU and having the resources to provide specialized services embodies our commitment to caring for these precious babies, especially during those first few vital weeks."
A Level III certification indicates that Franciscan Health Indianapolis provides specialty care for patients with complex maternal and fetal conditions. Maintaining this certification requires ongoing quality improvement and education for all hospital team members.
The NICU at Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children includes private mother-baby suites allowing parents to stay with their baby around-the-clock. The facility also offers 24-hour access to neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners, along with AngelEye Health live-streaming cameras.
The Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children is located at 8111 South Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis.
