Nurses and staff at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Franciscan Health Indianapolis are bringing Halloween festivities to families with newborns in their care. The babies are dressed in costumes, including McDonald's French Fries, a mermaid, Woodstock, Mario from Super Mario Brothers, a ladybug, an owl, a dinosaur, and Snoopy.

"For families with a baby in the NICU, it is very important to be able to celebrate milestones such as a baby's first Halloween and we want to be able to provide them with that experience," said Lori Kraeszig, NICU manager at Franciscan Health Indianapolis. "It brings great joy to everyone to see these precious babies in their costumes and our team is very grateful to be able to provide families with a NICU baby a memory of their baby's first Halloween."

The Franciscan Health Center for Women & Children is the only Level III NICU serving south central Indiana. As a Level III facility, it offers advanced technology and specialized care for infants needing intensive neonatal treatment.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the NICU since its opening in 1974. Earlier this fall, the center hosted a reunion carnival for past NICU graduates and their families along with staff who have been part of its history over the decades.
