Franciscan Health Dyer is set to become a dedicated behavioral health campus by late 2027, according to an announcement from the Franciscan Alliance healthcare ministry. This transformation aims to address the increasing demand for mental health services in Indiana.

Sister M. Aline Shultz, OSF, Chairwoman of the Board at Franciscan Alliance, emphasized the importance of compassionate care: “Surrounding our patients with love, respect and dignity is fundamental to our Franciscan values.” She added that providing necessary care leads to better outcomes for patients and their communities.

The transition was approved by the Franciscan Alliance Board of Trustees as part of a regional approach to healthcare. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates significant mental health challenges in Indiana, with over 22% of adults experiencing mental illness. However, only 17% received mental health services last year. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues nationwide.

A study published in October 2023 highlighted the economic burden of untreated mental illness in Indiana, estimating annual societal costs at $4.2 billion. Additionally, there were 1,136 suicides reported in 2022, with Lake County having one of the highest rates.

The new behavioral health campus will expand its current inpatient unit and add more services. The existing emergency room will be repurposed into a high acuity Franciscan ExpressCare and an emergency intake department for behavioral health needs. Patients requiring emergency medical care can visit nearby Franciscan Health Munster.

International studies suggest that up to 15% of emergency room visits are related to mental health issues. A specialized intake center could alleviate pressure on general emergency rooms by providing targeted care for those experiencing a crisis.

Current behavioral health services will remain at Dyer while other medical services move to Munster by late 2027. Staff members are expected to continue their roles across both campuses.

Construction led by Tonn and Blank Construction is underway at Munster, featuring expansions including new medical structures slated for completion alongside other facilities opening in late 2026.

Dean Mazzoni, President and CEO of Franciscan Health Dyer, Munster and Michigan City stated: “We look forward to continuing our long-standing presence serving Dyer, Munster and the Region with these expanded services.”
