The Beecher Fire Protection District, in collaboration with regional fire departments and districts, is taking part in the "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign to promote holiday fire safety. The initiative involves displaying a wreath adorned with red lights at the fire station. A white light will replace a red one if a fire results from holiday decorations.
December is noted as the peak month for home candle fires, according to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). They indicate that candles start two out of every five home decoration fires. To mitigate risks, the public is encouraged to use flameless candles or adhere to several safety guidelines when using traditional candles.
U.S. fire departments respond annually to approximately 210 home structure fires caused by Christmas trees. Electrical issues account for three out of ten such incidents, while heat sources too close to trees cause one in four fires. Guidelines are provided for selecting and placing Christmas trees safely.
Further advice covers both natural and artificial tree decorations, emphasizing the importance of using lights approved by recognized testing laboratories and ensuring they are suitable for their intended environment. Proper maintenance and disposal of holiday lights are also advised to minimize hazards.
