Franciscan Health has introduced the Fresh Start Market near its Indianapolis campus to assist families in Marion and Johnson counties with access to healthy food options. The market offers a variety of proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains, and other nutritious choices for individuals and families needing food assistance.

Danielle Crowder, director of Community Health Improvement for Franciscan Health, explained the market's purpose: “The Fresh Start Market is all about creating a dignified space where families shop for and select free, quality, perishable and non-perishable goods, similar to if they were shopping at a grocery store or a farmers market.” She emphasized that this approach promotes self-sufficiency and encourages positive health outcomes through behavior change.

Research indicates that providing healthy food options can significantly benefit communities. Crowder highlighted the importance of accessibility and cultural dietary preferences: “We believe the Fresh Start Market approach works because it stresses accessibility and cultural dietary preferences. For example, Burmese patrons can select from foods they are familiar with. Selecting from healthy foods that our clients know and love is a winning recipe.”

The market operates with support from volunteers, including many Franciscan employees. It receives funding through grants, charitable donations, and partnerships with the Franciscan Health Foundation.

Open on the first and third Thursday of each month from 2 to 5 p.m., proof of Indiana residency is required for entry. The Fresh Start Market Food Pantry is located in the Franciscan Health Sierra Building at 1040 Sierra Drive in Greenwood.
